I don't want anyone to freak out, but I wanted you to hear the news from me directly, rather than through rumors.
Back in early September, I went in to the doctor to get a physical and blood work done, and to make a long story short, the doctors found a golfball sized mass in my spleen. After x-rays, ultrasounds and catscans, the decision was made to remove my spleen. The doctors don't know if the mass is cancerous or benign, but they all agreed that it was much safer to just go ahead and remove the spleen to be safe. Due to the delicate nature of the spleen, a biopsy is just not a safe option.
I decided to postpone the surgery until after the fall crew season in order to not disrupt the season or unneccesarily worry everyone. The surgery will be laparoscopic and is scheduled for this Thursday, November 8th, but the procedure is supposed to be pretty routine, and I should be fine after a short recovery period.
Unfortunately, this means that I will not be able to be at the Sports Awards Assembly next week, but I wanted to make sure that I thanked everyone for a great season this fall, and I'm looking forward to an amazing season this spring.
This is not an excuse to slack off, because I will be back sooner than you would like to make sure that everyone is staying in shape and continuing their training over this coming winter.
I look forward to seeing all of you soon!
-Tom
