Shipley Crew Tent and Food
Welcome to Shipley Crew!
Crew is not just a sport for students. It is a sport for the family. Rain or shine, each weekend from the end of Spring Break through May, Shipley rowers, coaches, parents, siblings and friends gather at the tent along the Schuylkill River to enjoy the races. The festival like atmosphere on the river is a motivation to the rowers and a fun way to support our children in their races.
Shipley Tent
Our Shipley Crew trailer typically arrives to the Grandstands parking lot the day before the races begin. The tent is often set up at that time in the area in front of the parking lot’s left end when facing the river (closest end to the grandstands). There may be occasions where the parents of the first rowers racing in the morning will need to set up the tent. The same group will be responsible for setting up two tables from the trailer, tablecloths, baskets, water dispensers and organizing the breakfast items as they arrive. The expected time for this to occur is two hours before the first race; in other words, after you drop your child off to the boat house.
The tent remains up throughout the day. We must be off Kelly Drive by 6:00 pm, when the drive re-opens to the public. With this in mind, parents of the student rowers racing later in the afternoon will begin to organize food for the final rowers while packing up non-essential items, tables and the tent. The trailer will be returned to the Shipley School parking garage by a parent with a trailer hitch.
Crew Food
For the past few seasons we have had a successful system of providing food for a crowd. We try to make this a fun day for all while keeping it financially equitable for parents. In the past we have asked each family to contribute to the food fund to provide for items such as propane, paper and plastic serving products, rolls, buns, and a variety of grillable items (burgers, hot dogs, sausage and vegetarian option). Additionally, this fund provides the end of season coaches’ gifts. This year, we have reduced the requested amount to $65. Checks should be made payable to our “banker”, Stacey Helmers, with “Shipley Crew Food Fund” as the memo. Please mail this to Stacy Helmers, 1325 Summer Hill Lane, Gladwyne, PA 19035.
In addition to purchasing bulk items and readying the trailer for the season, the food committee will plan a menu and post a sign-up genius three to four days before the regatta. Please select an item you can provide according to the time your child will be arriving to the boathouse. Most often, novices race earliest so it’s most convenient for those parents to supply breakfast items.
Food Captains
In the past few seasons we have found having two food captains in a day works best: one for the breakfast shift and another for lunch shift.
Breakfast Captain
set up tent with help
set up tables and table cloths with help set up (2) water and drink dispensers
set out plates,cups, utensils, napkins
set out large serving utensils
organize coffee/hot chocolate area
organize breakfast items
set up grill for omelet chef/heat quiches
remove or consolidate breakfast items
communicate to food committee items that are running low in trailer
Lunch Captain
organize lunch items as they arrive
heat grill and begin to cook lunch items
consolidate food for final rowers
pack clean grill in back of trailer
pack tables and tent last
distribute or dispose of perishable food
clean serving utensils & beverage dispensers (at home)
return items to trailer in Shipley parking garage
communicate to food committee items that are running low in trailer
All food should be placed in disposable containers whenever possible. When deciding what to contribute, please keep in mind that sound nutrition is essential for strength and endurance. Having some desserts and treats at the tent is fine but we also need to offer healthy options. Due to allergies we are a nut free tent. Below is a sampling of items that may appear on the weekly sign-up.
Breakfast: bagels and cream cheeses, quiche or omelets, fresh fruit, granola, muffins, regular and decaffeinated coffee, hot chocolate (there is a Dunkin Donuts close to the race course)
Appetizers: fresh fruit platter or salad, crudité platter, cheese board, crackers and chips, hummus.
Lunch: pasta salad, green salad, hummus platter, tomato pie, hoagies, pulled pork, ribs (food committee provides larger items like burgers, hotdogs and sausage).
Dessert: brownies, cookies, cupcakes
Boathouse
Encourage your rower to bring a reusable water bottle and pre-race snack such as a granola bar to the boathouse. Rowers are encouraged to refuel at the tent post-race. If the regatta has a finals session, we will do our best to transport the rowers to the tent so they can eat between races. Some rowers come prepared with a skateboard, scooter or bike so they can travel between the boathouse and tent more easily.
It takes a lot of people to create the festive atmosphere at regattas so we encourage everyone to join in. Feel free to contact either of us with any questions.
See you at the river!
